Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future: A Journey in Caregiving

2024 was a difficult year for many, but if you were among them, you can undoubtedly attest to God’s goodness, mercy, and love, which sustain us.

Over the last ten months, our family had to bid two parents farewell for the time being. We have learnt how to deal with many processes, such as wills, organising closets, donating clothing, and coping with bereavement.

There is no “normal” time for grieving, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve after a loss. The amount of time it will take a person to grieve will depend on the circumstances of the death, the nature of the relationship, and their own personal needs. It’s more of a complicated, ongoing process that comes in waves.

Once the initial shock of grief wears off, the best way to pay tribute to your loved ones is not through your own pain and suffering, not through their own metaphorical death, but by living on as fully as possible, or by living as the other person would want you to live.

Great beginnings

The Caregiverscounsel was formally launched in September, and while we are still in the process of setting up, the foundation is steadfast in our vision and mission to improve the lives of those who provide informal care by raising awareness, empowering and educating people, and providing resources to help with grieving.

We take great pride in our Academy, Care Net Inc., which will host several online courses, live workshops, and mastermind sessions in the future. As a specialist counsellor, my ministry, Caregivers Counsel, is registered with the National Association for Christian Counsellors and Ministries’ (NACCM) Accountability Collaboration program.

I entered the Rising Star 2024 Award competition as a proud member of the South African Council for Businesswomen, and I’m happy to report that I was placed second in South Africa in this category. The podcast is available for listening here.

A great Thank you to dear friend and colleague, Ziva Spangenberg for inspiration and leadership through this journey up till now. She was also elected as President of SACBW for 2025. From the Counsel we can only wish her all the best, but I know she is anointed for good success!

Whenever you may feel stuck in this journey remember:

“Regardless of what challenge you are facing right now, know that it has not come to stay. It has come to pass. During these times, do what you can with what you have, and ask for help if needed. Most importantly, never surrender. Put things in perspective. Take care of yourself. Find ways to replenish your energy, strengthen your faith, and fortify yourself from the inside out.” – Les Brown
